Sprague Lake is a popular lake off Bear Lake Road. A nature tour around the lake provides an educational experience. The east side of the lake provides great views of Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide. Glacier Creek flows out of Glacier Gorge, through Glacier Basin, and stops here a while on its way to the Big Thompson River.
There's a livery stable here for summer horseback riding and also a handicap access to the Lake. In winter, many cross country skiers find this a beautiful and easy trip to begin their skiing vacation. Ponderosa Pines surround the lake with patches of Lodgepole Pine that sprung up after the 1900 fire.
Sprague Lake was the site of Sprague Lodge, a very popular resort hotel from 1914 through 1957. Abner Sprague, one of the most influential men in the early Park history and an expert guide and namer of many landmarks in the Park, was the proprietor. Part of his legacy was the two large manuscripts on the early history of the Park.
